The Maasai Mara National Reserve has earned a prestigious global accolade, officially recognised by the World Book of Records UK as the site of the World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration.

In a formal communication to Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, World Book of Records President Santosh Shukla confirmed the award, describing the Mara as the stage for the largest and most dramatic land animal migration anywhere on Earth.

“We are delighted to inform you that the Maasai Mara National Reserve has been officially included in the World Book of Records under the title: World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration. This recognition honours the extraordinary spectacle involving over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes that traverse the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem each year,” wrote Shukla.

Since its establishment in 1961, the Maasai Mara has been a jewel in Kenya’s tourism crown, famed worldwide for the annual migration that attracts visitors from every corner of the globe. Each year, thousands of travelers converge on the reserve to witness nature’s greatest drama—the thundering herds crossing rivers, plains, and predators’ paths in one of the most breathtaking displays of survival and renewal.

Governor Ntutu hailed the recognition as a defining moment for Kenya, noting that it reflects not only the spectacle of the migration but also the region’s deep commitment to conservation.

“This global accolade celebrates the awe-inspiring migration while underscoring the ecological significance of the Greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem, which harbours more than a quarter of Kenya’s biodiversity. It is a proud moment for Narok County, for Kenya, and for Africa,” Ntutu said.

Kenya’s tourism sector, which recorded Sh142 billion in earnings in the first half of 2024, continues to benefit greatly from the Mara’s enduring appeal. The Governor added that since assuming office two and a half years ago, his administration has invested heavily in revitalising the reserve to ensure both ecological sustainability and a world-class tourism experience.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano joined in celebrating the milestone, applauding the Narok County Government, local communities, and President William Ruto for their role in safeguarding the Mara’s integrity.

“This recognition is more than just an award—it is a win for Kenya and for the entire planet. The Maasai Mara belongs to the world, and it remains one of the clearest reminders of why conservation matters. Karibu Kenya, Karibu Maasai Mara!” Miano said.

The official World Record certificate will be formally presented at the Maasai Mara campus on a date yet to be announced, marking another chapter in the Mara’s legendary status as one of the planet’s most extraordinary natural wonders.
